SAFE: Energy's Moment Must Be Now

WASHINGTON – Robbie Diamond, president and CEO of Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE), released the following statement in advance of President Obama’s State of the Union Address:

“It is critical that, as the president refocuses on jobs and the economy, he also appreciates the critical importance of energy security to our recovery.  Record-high oil prices in 2008 helped contribute to this economic downturn, and as long as we remain dependent on petroleum, our economy and our national security are at risk.  Energy security, particularly through the electrification of our cars and trucks, is a ‘win-win’ issue for the president and the nation.  It offers an opportunity for major bipartisan progress on a serious issue, it represents a pathway to create new jobs, and most of all, it helps to protect our nation.

“Unfortunately, energy security is too often relegated to the back burner in Washington. Those who appreciate both the threats and the opportunities in front of us acknowledge that we cannot afford to wait for the next crisis.  Energy’s moment must be now.”

Securing America’s Future Energy (SAFE) is an action-oriented, nonpartisan organization that aims to reduce America’s dependence on oil and improve U.S. energy security to bolster national security and strengthen the economy.

“For too long, our national security and our economy have been dependent on a global oil market that we cannot control. We can no longer remain at the mercy of terrorists, anti-American regimes, or even hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico...”
